I have an '86 rude - 140 HP. After running a lot tests I have determined my cylinder firing problem (both on port side of engine) must be caused by a faulty stator or trigger. I need to remove the flywheel to check things out. I have ordered a harmonic balancer puller which should do the trick. How careful must I be in the removal and re-installation ? Does the flywheel position have to be marked before removal ? Anything cleaned or re-greased ? Also, can you replace the sensor coils separately or do you have go for a new timer base ? Thanks.

The flywheel is indexed with a keyway so you can only put it back on in the right position with the keyway properly installed. Now for actually pulling the flywheel, put the pulley on and crank down the puller bolt as tight as you can get it. A half inch airwrench is great for this bit not necessary. After cranking the puller bolt down tight, hit it with a hammer, hard, straight down. Tighten the bolt some more and hit it again, repeat until the flywheel comes up. Walker

Before you replace the flywheel, clean the taper on the crankshaft and the hole in the flywheel. Be sure there is NO oil or grease on either. If anything, rough up the taper and hole with 320 grit or so emery cloth. No oil dirt or grease!

c/6

Hooty
