Flywheel Removal

Working towards rebuilding power head pistons, rings, bearings, etc. ... on a 94 Johnson 115. Removed pretty much everything off the block heads, carbs, intake, wire harness, and got to the flywheel. Use strap wrench and 1 5/16" socket on breaker bar to remove nut. Quite a battle but the nut came off. Now I've placed a standard puller (three bolt) on the crankshaft and flywheel and cranked down pretty heavy the thing won't budge. Can I use heat on the crank or flywheel to release? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Flywheel Removal

Thanks Tim! Found some good advice on other threads out there. On another note any idea how heavy the block, crank, rods, pistons and other misc. items may be? Will I need a hoist to remove power head from the lower unit?

Don't want to apply alot of heat on the flywheel, it can mess the magnets up and render it useless. Not real sure on how the ignition is setup on yours, just be carefull.

Put the flywheel nut back on the crankshaft (so that the top of the crank is almost flush with the nut), then put your puller on,making sure that you use grade 8 bolts.

Every once in a while, smack the large center bolt of the puller, then tighten it down some more. It will pop, but it will take patience on your part.

Get yourself one of these (Ebay, etc. <$20) to hold flywheel when it comes time to torque it. Way better than a strap wrench.

Be patient with removal. I wouldn't recommend heat or solvents. Sometimes with a tough flywheel, use an impact wrench on the center bolt will pop it. Make sure to use Gr8 bolts and washer and see Secret File sticky for more info.

Re: Flywheel Removal

To answer your question it should be pretty light to remove. I just rebuilt my 1996 90 evinrude and was able to lift the powerhead off of the motor with two people. with all the heads etc off it will be fairly light. If you need some help or gudance i took pictures of my rebuild that i can foward if you get stumped or have a question.

Re: Flywheel Removal

Be sure that you have a tapered rotating tip on your puller to engage in the grind center of the crank shaft. I use a 1/2 inch drive air impact gun for all my flywheel removal. No need for a strap wrench.
I get a few nay sayers but I have never had a problem and certainly no damage.
If after you have loaded the puller the flywheel still doesn't budge then give the end of the puller a sharp rap with a hammer. It should just pop up.
