Hello ajohnston
I use a harmonic balance puller. You can get them at any auto parts place.

ajohnson...a harmonic balancer puller should work
for this...put the puller on and tighten good if it don't come off rap the top of the puller with a hammer and walla...she should pop right off. Don't use a sledge of\r hit it hard enough to do internal damage, but just give it good rap...
just a Thought

FYI, a harmonic balance puller is a three-point puller that uses the three 1/4"x20 threaded holes near the center of the flywheel. NEVER pry on the outer edge of a flywheel..
- Scott

Re: Flywheel removal

go to O'riellys auto parts or autozone, get a harmonic balance puller, cost is $7.50 plus tax. Then go to home depot or preferably lowes(better assortment) and get grade 8 bolts to use. It is probably a 1/4" hole with a 20 thread per inch bolt you need. Using cheap bolts will just strip when tension gets hard. It takes some time and eventually it will "pop" off the magneto. Just make sure the puller is parallel to the flywheel when you start or it will go off balance and bend bolts somewhat
