Flywheel replacement

Hello, I have a 1956 Big Twin 30 hp. model 25022 serial 09697 manual start that I would like to convert to electric start. Did Evinrude make a flywheel that would work on this model and if so do you know where I can find a part number so I can start looking for a replacement. Thank you for your help and for providing a site like this, Ken.

hello<br /> yes quite a number of flywheels will work. most of the flywhels had a counter weight bolted to them in place of a ring gear. most of the old flywheels could have the counter weight unbolted and the ring gear bolted on. check the parts manual for your application. good luck and keep posting.<br /> I have a 58 or 59 35 out back someplace

Try to find an outboard junkyard or where the local marinas send their junk engines. You should find all the parts you need there, since they don't often break or wear out.<br />If you are converting the outboard to remote, you'll also be looking for a new carb that has a solenoid mounted to the bottom for the choke. I think you'll find that you only need the carb bowl part.<br />There's a few junkyards online, but try to find a local one. Those flywheels and starters are pretty heavy.<br />I don't know about swapping ring gears - both mine were balanced with (on) the flywheel. I'd be looking for a complete flywheel/ring gear assembly.<br /><br />Good luck and welcome!

I have a new (1959 35hp) flywheel in the original box.<br /><br />Also, have a rebuilt, but never used starter, in the box.<br /><br />Had not planned on selling them, but I will now.<br /><br />Don't want to run afoul of iBoats no-sale policies, but maybe we can work out something.

Hello and thank you for the reply's. I found a flywheel(part # 580232)and it fits the crankshaft but the key way is not cut the same as the original flywheel, would that be a normal finding or maybe this new wheel is not the right one after all?

Hi 56 evin<br />The parts manual shows the flywheel and ring gears as separate parts with separate numbers. The flywheel #s are 580213 the ring gear is #303698.These are original part #s. The flywheel #580213 supercedes to part# 580336, so this will work also. You will want to be fussy on which flywheel you choose. A good and correct keyway is a must. The keyway is the only timing for the engine and if it ain't right nothing else will ever be. If you decide to just replace the ring gear keep what Paul said about ballance in mind. You can certainly perform this task, just check that it is ballanced when done.

Thanks again for your help. I can't seem to find a flywheel with numbers 580213 or 580336. I have taken pretty accurate measurements on the 580232 flywheel and I believe it will work, it is just that the keyway is not cut as deep as in the original flywheel(580191)also the original has no counter weight or even a flange to bolt one to.I guess a machine shop can cut it deeper. So maybe someone can tell me why the woodruff key has 2 distinct notches on the side of it? If I did'nt have shoulder problems I would leave this project alone. Thank you.

I can tell you that the mark on the side of the woodruff key, the notch or line that goes toward one edge, should face down towards the block. Why I don't know.

The '56 manual start 30hp flywheel had no provisions for the ring-gear add-on. They were two entirely different flywheels. I would not mix-and-match ring gears as they are factory balanced with the flywheel they come on. Unless you have a way to balance it yourself I would hold out for a complete flywheel. They're not uncommon... As was noted, you'll likely find several at your local outboard junkyard...<br />- Scott

Thank you all for your time and patience, it is a comfort knowing there are still folks that will give without a price tag attached. I finally got this old motor to start with a electric starter, what it took for me anyway was to open the key way all the way to the top of the crankshaft ( so I could see the woodruff key ) make a custom woodruff key, drill a larger hole thru the recoil assembly where it bolts to the new starter bracket and install the 580232 flywheel, torqued it down then took it off to check every thing put it back together and it all worked out great.
