Flywheel/ring gear

Hey yall,

I have a 20 hp 68 Johnson and I was just wondering... what is the point of the ring gear thats bolted onto the flywheel? I figured it was for if that motor if it was an electric start.

Would there be any benefits to taking it off if I didnt need it?

As long as it's there just leave it. You might screw up the balance if you remove it.

Also that ring gear is there as a needed weight factor. Removing it will interfere with the running of the engine. Leave it alone.
