How do I get the fly wheel off. I removed the bolt and need to know If the flywheel puller is expensive or can I rent it. What does the key look like. My last post mentioned some work beeing done on this motor by my Bishops son who knew nothing. Was told to remove flywheel and check the key. Due to it backfiring when I tried to start it. Will the repair book from seloc tell me how to do this? The few who have been helping know I truly need help. LOL My email is dacrew4009@cox.net

Those 55 flywheels can be bears to remove. You can try a large flywheel puller or gear puller on the rim. Or. You can make your own from some heavy steel and use the three bolt holes used to hold on the rope starter flange. If the flywheel has broken the key and spun on the shaft, it is possible that it will be loose and easier to remove. Wedge a lug wrench or tire iron under the rim of the flywheel, being careful not to damage the alternator windings or magneto coils and carefully rap the loosened nut with a heavy hammer. You leave the nut on the crankshaft to protect the threads.

The key looks like a semi-circular woodruff key about 3/4 inch long in the crankshaft nose with a flat extension about 1 inch long that goes down into the cam to locate it. So, if the key has sheared, not only may the flywheel have spun but the cam may have also.

I got my flywheel puller from advance auto for under $20 and I replaced the bolts that came with it with longer bolts. it holds better this way

Dont get a syloc. Try and find a clymer or go to chrysler crew and buy a down loadable repair manual.

Be REAL careful taking that wheel off there are a lot of really important parts under there.The last time I had a problem similar,the magnetic ring inside the flywheel had come loose,used wheel ,$50.00
