Foam in an outboard cover?

What is the foam on the inside of the outboard cover for?
Do I really need to replace it if I remove it?
If I do what type of foam do I use and where can I find it?
I would assume it was to cut down engine noise.

Thanks
Bryan

You are right. Its used for noise supression. You can use about anything that is fire proof and gasoline resistant.

Threw mine away when it came loose.
A noisey engine is a comforting racket.:p

I pulled the foam out of mine. Everyone thinks I got some kinda hot rod motor now.
