So i pulled off some old vinyl to replace it, and the wood crumbled. That actually made me laugh.

My problem now is, the wood was covered with a very thin foam type padding, 1/8 or even 1/16 to basically take the hardness away from the wood. Where can i get something like this online? I would need it at least 70 inches long or longer. I already have the new vinyl, so i just need the foam stuff. Walmart only has fluffy batting and won't work. thanks!

Yes, it is 1/8" foam padding usually with a mesh backing. Used for upholstery . . . I still have a good sized roll of it in my closet somewhere . . .

I think I got the stuff from Gary's Upholstery Online . . .

You won't find too much at Walmart in that regard.

Try a piece goods/fabrics store..(where women go to get their fabrics/sewing supplies)...they keep all kinds of foam, fabric, vinyl, leather, etc.

Are you talking about something to go between the vinyl and the polyurethane foam (like batting) in seating, or something that is directly on top of the wood like in bulkheads or vinyl-covered panels?

If directly on top of the wood, look for "volara" or "landau" foam. It's a thin closed-cell foam that is used under the vinyl on vinyl-top cars, or for padding under felt on a card table. Very flexible and glues down with spray adhesive.

I got mine here:

If you want to look locally, the underlayment for fake wood floors (Pergo) is pretty much the same stuff, I think.

I used neoprene from JoAnn fabrics. Easy to work with, easy to glue, and closed-cell so no absorption. While you're there, pick up their headliner spray adhesive in the orange and yellow can. Much better than 3M 77 or 99. Chip

Re: foam/padding under vinyl

its just a very thin foam type stuff that is on between the wood and vinyl on the side panels, just to take away from the blunt hardness of the wood, looks like its 1/4" in the spots where its not worn down and doesn't have a mesh backing or anything, its solid foam laid down with spray adhesive. So what is my best replacement for this stuff? At gary's upholstery he has many things listed but no pictures so i can't compare so i don't know which one to use...
