I have two areas in the back of my boat that would make for great live wells, and or ice coolers, however these use to be seating areas and have foam in there. Can the foam be removed, and if so will it damage the boat at all?

Re: Foam Removal

Jim, Rmoval of the foam is not hard, however, sometimes the foam supports the "V" part of the fiberglass hull. Also, the foam is required to float the boat if it fills with water. Here are some suggestions.

If you dig out the foam to make the opening for the cooler or livewell, only dig out enough foam to make the well have a flat bottom. Now cover the remaining foam with fiberglass cloth and resin. The remaining foam, held in place by the new fiberglass work, should still support the sides of the hull. Also, try to replace the foam you have removed somewhere nearby, to preserve the original floatation.

Re: Foam Removal

I wouldn't need to remove much of the foam, and could easily do as you are suggesting.
