Re: foam under deck question

Not a good idea to reuse old foam. Pool noodles work well as well as the blue sheet foam from H. D. or Lowes. Be sure it is closed cell so as not to retain any water. Seems there are a few redoing 16 SS right now I just finished a complete rebuild last August. Fairly easy job if you can do it out of the weather.

Re: foam under deck question

there are many posts on foaming a boat up in the restoration section.

people have used everything (as mentioned) from pool noodles to the 2 part pour in foam.

the reason for the foam is safety.....if the boat swamps (fills with water) the foam will keep the boat afloat and give the passengers something to hang on to whilst waiting to be fished form the sea

not a pool noodle fan, if you can find "block" styrofoam, get sheets of it and tape it together with NASHUA waterproof tape after you glue the layers with an epoxy based adhesive

Hey Starman, do you have stock in this Nashua tape?? LOL You use it on everything! It must be good stuff, you convinced me. Now I'm definetly going to have to get some and give it a try.

This stuff was tested submerged for 2 weeks underwater, no give!

I tested it also. Crazy good stuff.

From looking on their website GREAT STUFF? POND & STONE
12 oz., 16 oz.

GREAT STUFF? Pond & Stone is a polyurethane-based insulating foam sealant designed for use in water features. By expanding to fill gaps and cracks, it works as a waterproof sealant to help direct the flow of water in waterfall, pond and streambed construction to go where you want it to go, not under or behind rocks. The foam is black to blend in among the stones and shadows. It cures in 8 hours to create a permanent, water-shedding bond for stone, rock, masonry, concrete and most other building materials. It's perfect for water features from fountains to koi ponds because it's safe for fish. UL Classified.

?Landscape/hardscape foam filler, sealer and adhesive
?Damp and dry application
?Adheres to stone and rock
?Fish and plant safe
?Expands to fill gaps to direct water flow over rocks
?Secures stones without mortar
?Repairs cracks and holes in trees
?Cures in 8 hours
?Black colored foam
?One 12 oz. can = up to 19 tubes of caulk
?One 16 oz. can = up to 24 tubes of caulk
?All-direction dispensing
?UL Classified
Only thing they don't tell you is the boyancy of the stuff to know if it will hold the weight of the boat, passengers and gear.

I know I have read a bunch of posts on foam and from what I gather pour in is the best way to go.

Second choice closed cell blue or pink sheet glued together and I would even put some dabs of Great Stuff to hold the foam from rattling around under the deck.

I dont like the pool noodle thing. the reason i want to do it is because i believe the foam in now is def. holding water. i think i might try the spray in how much should i buy

Foam talk! Duck!!!!

In general, you'll find the metal boat guys prefer, in order of most used(unscientific)...

1. Blue/Pink Foam Board
2. Pool Noodles
3. Pour In Foam
4. Nothing
5. Put back the old stuff

There is even some wacko over on the rebuild section who is putting laundry soap bottles in his boat:rolleyes::facepalm:

"Great Stuff" has generally been frowned upon for several reasons. The most obvious one is it's pricey. If you want to go that route you may as well go pour in foam.

Have fun!:D

Cut them to fit snug. Once the new floor is down they wont move around.

Re: foam under deck question

If you use the pourable, I recommend putting a layer of plastic between it and the hull. We have seen poured foam (from the factory) trap water against the aluminum and cause corrosion. That's the reason a number of us aren't particularly fond of pourable for aluminum hulls. I didn't go with noodles on my project because I'm cheap (in fact I dropped over $200 on noodles) I did it because I genuinely feel it is a good solution. But many on here disagree with me.

Re: foam under deck question

Is all of the solid foam water proof so water cant get in it? or do you have to make it water proof

The pink or blue sheet foam is closed cell and waterproof.
