I'll keep this simple.

OMC states in the owner?s manual that they want me to remove the low speed knob and rapidly inject OMC rust preventative oil until the motor stops. So let me clarify this, with the motor running I need to pry off the low speed knob, then unscrew the low speed shaft that enters the carb and get in there with the fogging oil tube?

I don't know about your engine, but all I do to my 1977 15hp Evinrude is to take the cowl off and with the engine running spray the fogging oil in the air silencer on the carb until she quits running.

Don't you need to remove the knob to allow removal of the cowl. Once removed, you spray the fogging oil intot he carb throat.

I think they want you to remove the low speed knob so you can then take off the airbox, and then, you start the engine and spray in the fogging oil.

That said, I have never used the fogging oil, and once my engine sat for 5 years. In fact, I have a 1932 Muncie, and outboards from the 1940s and 50s that have sat for decades with no problems. All I do is to pull on the rope once a year, and every few years I run them and drain off the gas afterwards. I'm guessing that if you are close to the ocean in a real humid salt air environment, it probably is a good precaution.

Well the knob came off just like that, but I could see that reaching the shaft was less appealing. I just removed 4 bolts over the intake silencer, started & sprayed down the carb throat. I sprayed until I ran the motor out. I put down the bottle and saw my fogging oil. I looked back down at the bottle I just put down and read ?garage door oil?. Great. I hooked the tank up and ran the motor another 10 minutes before fogging with the real fogging oil. It starts, it pumps, has no hot spots. I did find a leak at the thermostat however, and the idle speed-adjusting knob on the side was unthreaded & disconnected. I already drained and refilled the gearcase; now I can check for water intrusion.

Sounds like they recommend pulling the low speed knob so you can fog the motor directly into the carb throat w/o removing cowl and silencer. (Straw on fogging can be aimed into carb throat w/low speed knob removed).
