I have an '04 Suzuki 225HP four stroke. I have been receiving some conflicting information about whether or not to fog four stroke engines for winter storage. My engine is stored on the boat outside in New England for the winter.

The owners manual does recommend fogging, so I am inclined to go ahead with it.

Anyone have any thoughts why it would not be a good idea to fog the engine?

To prevent rust. With 2-strokes you can get away with not fogging the motor because there's usually residual oil. Not so with 4-strokes. Those cylinder walls have very little oil left on them when the rings scrape it off on the downstroke. So anything above the piston is susceptible to rust and that's not good. The valve stems can also rust up. Fogging a running motor is the only way to protect those. But if all you can do is get some oil into the sparkplug holes, then that's way better than nothing.

I always fog mine. Inhibits corrosion and keeps stuff that ain't gonna be moving for a while coated in oil which can't be bad in my mind. Aslo, if the manual says to do it, I would for that reason too.

Thanks Peter_in_Maine and WillyBWright. Kind of what I figured. The procedure in the manual calls for spraying the fogging oil into the air inlet while the motor is running until it starts to smoke. Then removing spark plugs and spraying directly into cylinders followed by rotating flywheel by hand to distribute.

Just like my old two stroke.
