Hello all,
Can anybody take me step by step on fogging the engine on a 5.7GXi Volvo Penta?

Appreciate it.

The procedure is about identical to Mercruisers as far as the fogging mixture you run. Here is a post that has the Merc service bulletin that explains the process.

I can't find the Volvo bulletin, but the difference was that Volvo says 2 stroke oil whereas Merc says fogging oil. They both do the same thing.

Thank you for that Don, doesn't seem difficult at all. Correct me if I'm wrong but mix up the ingredients, detach the hose that runs from the gas tank to the engine, run the line from mixture into the fuel pump (as if the mixture is now the gas tank) and run the engine for 15 minutes.

right?

That's it.
What I normally do during winterization, is to change the engine mounted fuel filter and pre fill it with the fogging mixture. It's a lot easier on the pumps than to try and fill the filter when empty.

Re: fogging Volvo Penta 5.7GXi

makes perfect sense Don. Another question, at what point of the winterization should I do this? Should I do it when I have the flusher attached with fresh water, or when I'm flushing with antifreeze?

My first thought would be to do this while fresh water is flushing, THEN run the antifreeze through. However, If I do that, then run the engine with the antifreeze hooked up to the earmuffs, will the foggin mixture burn off and the treated gas from the gas tank run through the system?

Kind of confusing but I hope I worded it correctly.

My owner manual for our Volvo 5.7Gi-C says 'do not use fogging oil'.

Thoughts?

But I would actually trust Don over the manual. ;)

If it's a raw water cooled engine, DO NOT try to run it with antifreez on muffs.
Go up to the adults only sticky and read about it. Items #6 & 7 will pobably interest you.

After reading the details in the adults only section I am leaning towards having a Volvo mechanic winterize the engine.

Everything I've read on other sites and from WestMarine.com was that earmuffs and antifreeze would be fine, as long as the thermostat is wide open and the engine is warm. Nothing about draining ALL raw water from the engine (block, manifold, etc.).

I'm leaving the winterization to the dealer. They do run it on muffs. If the block comes back cracked it's there nut and since the boat is still under warranty I have somebody to point to.

I believe there is a Volvo service bulletin around somewhere about the fogging of the engine. It is very similar to the Merc noted above

It is very easy to drain the block and manifolds though - there are 4 blue plugs total, 2 below the manifolds and 2 lower at the bottom of the block. They simply unscrew and fill your bilge with water :D.

You do also need to drain the impeller feed hoses and the big water hose from the thermostat and another to the fuel pump area.

I think if you want to do it yourself the safest way is to drain as described above and then pop the thermostat housing and pour antifreeze directly into the block. Do the same for all the hoses you disconnected, reconnect and sleep soundly for many months.

Cheers.

He's got a Volvo, not a Mercruiser. No blue plastic plugs.

Sure, but they are just selling the kits, all they have to say is you probably did something wrong, if you post the letters after the 5.7GXi, we can probably find you a manual. Some engines have some different things to drain.

I'm going to get the letter(s) after the GXi tomorrow night. I should buy a repair/service manual anyway, silly not to already have one if I'm going to attempt anything.

Re: fogging Volvo Penta 5.7GXi

You can also download an owners manual here.
http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/glo...ice/publication_search/publication_search.htm
Just put in your full model number or even the SN will work. Actually if you have the SN, I like to use it better than the model number anyway. Run into some other info on occasion.

To rangoneer, they don't want you to spray straight fogging oil into the throttle body of the MPI engines. It could possibly damage the injectors and sensors in the system. Having fogging oil in the mixture is not a problem.

You need them both, so you might as well download them and look. It's really obvious. They cover two completely different things.

Re: fogging Volvo Penta 5.7GXi

I'm glad I found this thread -- we're looking for winterizing information etc. as well. We also have a Monterey 262CR engine year is 2000. Serial #is 4012023186. The shared folder that was linked is for 2001 and newer. Is there anyway to get similar info for my Volvo Penta? Thanks!
