I just purchased an 1982 25 HP Johnson Long Shaft outboard. The previous owner told me he ran OUT of "fogging" oil, so didn't fog the engine in the Fall. It's winter here in Michigan, I don't have inside storage, so was wondering if I can still spray some fogging oil in the carb. and in the spark plug holes for the winter? Under the cowling and the carb. are really dirty, and I had to replace the "prop. bushing assy.," but other than that it looks good. Won't know anything else until Spring, because I can't start it here in Michigan anymore this winter. :)

Re: Fogging

Yup - do it. Spray oil in the cylinders and slowly pull the starter to distribute the oil. Then put the plugs back in.

Re: Fogging

I would also drain the gearcase and put fresh stuff in there along with new drain and vent screw gaskets in case there is water.

Re: Fogging

I had no choice but to drain the gearcase, because I needed to replace the "prop. bushing assy." There was lube coming out of the prop. area. I ordered part number 388078 1, but got part number E389281 (Prop HUB 25 HP) instead (in the mail) from my local marine store. It is not the same part, but because it was Saturday, I couldn't contact the store to find out why I got what I got. By the way I can't filnd my model number anywhere...it is J25TELCNB, 1982 Long shaft 25 HP Johnson. Any help?

Re: Fogging

J25TELCNB is the model number for a Johnson 25hp with Tiller, Electric start, and Long shaft from 1982 (CN).
I have not found the a tiller steered longshaft version listed though.

388078 does not check out as a Johnson / Evinrude part number at all. The prop bushing assembly is part number 0389281 but it is the prop hub and will have no bearing on oil leaks.

I guess you need the Prop shaft inner and outer SEALS part numbers 0321786 and 0321787 respectively
If it is worn you may also need 0389045 the GEARCASE HEAD ASSY. but that's over $100. The O ring for it is 0321921

See the diagram and parts list at http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1982/J25ELCNE 1982/GEARCASE/parts.html

or at http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=k5d9jlei7mupep07hr3rbi2ks6&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

Re: Fogging

BINGO! Captain Vic... The inner and outer seals is EXACTLY what I need. I'll get on it Monday morning...return what they sent me, and get the seals. I believe they need to be pressed in place, but that is easy enough. THANKS!

Re: Fogging

One more question, if I may. On the parts list (listed above) #52 is the gasket between lower unit, and shaft. I can't seem to locate the gasket anywhere, but was wondering if it is only O ring material, cut to fit. Mine doesn't look bad, but feel it should be replaced?
