Posting a number of threads and getting some good advice from fellow boaters.
Wanted too share what I found
Was having temp issues . At low throttle temp gauge seemed okay. Throttle down and gaining speed
temp gauge would increase too a unsafe level.
My mechanic said he changed impellar but symptems were time for an impellar change. AGAIN?
He said your impellar is good. ( not trusting of most marine mechanics I was thinking the worst)
I have a self contained cooling.
He said you may have an air bubble in cooling system not allowing water too go totally down??
Not agreeing ( along with fellow boaters on this forum ) I rolled up my sleeves.
I removed thermostat, thinking it was restricting flow but still ran hot.
Opened heat exchanger .
Found chuncks of an old impellar covering some of the water tubes in
the front heat exchanger, in the area where the hose from the outdirive brought in water too cool.
Thinking I fixed problem put back boat in river, and temp gauge increased when throttled down.
Everybody was saying change impellar, symptems were leaning towards a N.G. imepllar
Going too Sea Ray purchased a new impellar kit. I always wanted too tackle
and learned what too do. Impellar kit was reasonably priced for Sea Ray but what got me was the cost of
90 weight gear oil, $ 15 dollars a quart?? What happened too the days of $ .99 quart of oil
Lower unit came apart easily.
Removed old impellar and it seemed okay? Ends were firm and no chips.?? So why was I getting hot.
Installed new impellar, dropped in water and still N.G.
Now considering heat exchanger ??? Another job taking it off , taking too radiator shop and keep my finders crossed
it could be cleaned and if there was an issue fixed. Not a cheap re- placement
DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM
Water pump hose had a bend ,The hose going from impellar thru the transom too heat exchanger.
When unit went up and down caused it too pinch .Not visable ,Felling with my fingers was able too feel the hose and
bend and the reason for the water not too travel with enough force too cool engine.
Bend was simuliar when a cheap garden hose bends and water can not travel all the way and stops the flow.
Was able too make a fix with a copper tube. Cut water line, insertered copper tube, , clapped down,
Dropped in water, worked fine.
Will plan on removing lower unit next few days and replace with a very firm hose.
Something so simple, time waisted, a hundred bucks waisted for parts I did not need.
Happy Boating
