Ok, as a follow on to my earlier question on how to remove the clutch dog, I put the shift shaft down to reverse gear and then removed it, the prop shaft clutch dog and forward gear came out no problem. Now here's my question, how do I know if the clutch dog or forward gear or both need replacing? This is new to me, the clutch dog has some fine marks on it, but doesn't look too bad and the forward gear looks pretty good as well. I've taken a few pics of them, and would appreciate your thoughts on it as the clutch dog is about $100 and the Fwd gear more than twice that.
However, I don't seem to be able to upload pictures to this site - I read that there was a temporary problem w/ adding attachments but not sure if that the problem or its' me!!!
Thanks again, very much, for us retired folks, you save us a bunch of money....

reverse gear.jpgyou will look for the rounding off of the edges of the mating surfaces. you probably should have checked your linkage and cable adjustment before tearing the gear casing apart, as you noticed the gears are pricey and many shops will only replace the entire gear set because of issues that can occur when replacing only part of the gears. This is a pretty tedious process and you really need to have patience and pay attention to make cetian the gears are correctly installed, most people either get a good used foot $100-500 or an aftermarket one $700-900. you can mix and match gears but it is not recommended and may result in a shorter life than otherwise. make sure you replace all seals if you choose to rebuild.

Beach,

Not sure why you're in there but I'll guess it jumps out of gear? Look closely at the mating surfaces. They need to be sharp with no rounded edges and void of pit marks. Of course, pics will tell the story. The site is doing an upgrade and you can't upload pics right now. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. You might put them on photobucket.

Check around on other posts as I've seen pics of bad gears on here before.
