i'm getting a little water in the foot of my 76, 6hp evinrude. the oil is colored like coffee with cream.

how hard is to change out the 'o' rings and seals in this unit ? i haven't been able to find a shop manual for it.

does the gearcase have to be split to change them ?

which one is the most likely to be leaking?

It is not very hard at all. You need a seal kit:

A factory, model-specific Service Manual will make the job a lot easier:

You do need to split the gearcase. A hand impact tool will make short work of that.

The seals on the driveshaft often leak. The most common leaks are from bad seals on the drain and vent plugs.

Thanks for the info.
The individual parts, OEM, add up to about $70.

I'll probably go with the seal kit. It looks like all the part # I had in my OEM list .

change the fluid, and the seals on the drain and fill plugs. give it at try. these seal are the cause of 90 % of water in the lower unit. should be change everytime you pull the plug.

I agree with Tashasdaddy. Changing the seals on the vent and the drain plug solved the same problem I had on two of my motors.

Dang !
I was out-of-touch just after my post on 4/9 and missed the others about the drain & fill plugs. And I've already spent money on the seal kit.

I guess I wouldn't be out much more to change the oil & put new seals on the drain & fill plugs just to see if that's the fix. Sure would be easier than going inside. And, I could always keep the kit for later or sell it on Ebay.

Thanks guys.
