Got water in the foot of '74 85hp johnson. I replaced the propeller shaft seals, and the leak has slowed, but still there. i know there is shifter, and driveshaft seals in there, but what is the probability of them leaking? Thanks for the replies...

Re: foot leaking

When you replaced the propshaft seals..did you remove the Brg carrier? There are 5 other oring's on the carrier that should have been replaced.

Also..the Driveshaft seal can sometimes cause problems..but it not high on the list.

TMD

Re: foot leaking

No, i did not pull the carrier out. I tried, but i could not get it to budge. I did replace the seals, and the o-rings on the carrier bolts. I pulled the foot tonight, and the shift rod cover looks as if it had never been pulled. Guess i am looking at the big o-ring on the carrier, the driveshaft seal, and the shift rod seal. My question is where is the seal on the shift rod? Also, this is salt water use, when doing the water pump should i replace the impeller, and gasket alone, or should i replace the whole pump kit? I'd like to re-seal the whole foot, but i cannot get the bering carrier out. Maybe i will drop the foot off at the shop, and see if they can get that carrier out so i can put the other o-ring in there.

Re: foot leaking

Well, i pulled the foot. I put every seal, o-ring, and everything that seperates water from oil. Had to tear up the water pump getting it off, so it got a new pump too. Took it out today, and ran it, and oil is clean. After seeing the seals in the top of the foot i do not see how they could not leak. Guess if i hear of anyone else with a leak, i will tell them to put all new seals in it. Thaks to everyone who helped, and gave advise through this repair...
