So I am Contemplating the idea of rebuilding my engine through a shop, even though it still runs. I bought the boat used and I can't say its in perfect shape but I would love to rebuild it before anything really bad happens. Does anyone in the tampa bay area know a ball park cost of an engine rebuild? I mean rebuilding and setting it up ready for water.
Engine specs 85 mercruiser 305 5.0L.

Thanxs.

TampaBay, just curious if you have done any tests on the engine to determine the health? Compression test, leakdown test if compression numbers are low, etc. If you have not had any tests done then in my opinion it is worth paying a shop to do the basic tests before a rebuild effort.

I have never performed a compression test on an inboard. so I am not sure how to go about it. I do have a gauge set. Any instructions available somewhere?

A good shop can do that for you, not sure how much any would charge, but even a rebuilder shop would probably want to do a comp check to see what they are starting with.

Main points, have good battery and charged up. Pull ALL spark plugs before checking any one cylinder. Have throttle wide open. Disable the coil or at least watch out for arcing potential at spark plug wire ends. Do not try this if fuel leaks anywhere.

Also be sure the battery is good and charged all the way. Remember to remove ALL spark plugs first. (Deliberate double entry here!).

Best to try on warm engine if possible.

Do all cylinders dry first. Then go back to each one and squirt some oil in and try again.
