Starter troubles? Don't be afraid to rip into it, there is nothing to it! The only issue that you will have is reassembling the starter and keeping the brushes in place. The attached documents shows a breakout of a 50HP Merc starter and the tool that you can make in 5 minutes with a pair of tin snips.
As time goes on, all of that brush dust has nowhere to go, a little cleaning and a drop of oil on the bushings on each end will help resolve a few problems. My motor is a 1977 and my brushes are original, they look like they will be good for another 30 years, yet I could tell that dry bushings caused my issue. If I were to let it go, the premature disengaging and the dry sounding stop when I let go of the key may have caused future and more serious problems.
My starter was actually a little different, it was deeper and this exact tool had to be modified to be wider. I straightened it back out and rebent it in a larger configuration. Do yourself a favor and scratch a line or as I did, lightly stamp the top cap, bottom cap, and center magnet tube so that you can reassemble it with everything in the original position. I'm sure that this proceedure applies to more than just my 50 HP Merc.
