There is a guy in my neighborhood that owns a Gambler Intimidator Bass boat with a 200 hp Suzuki motor... The motor is in pretty good condition and when he fired it up on the muffs, sounded mean as hell. I'm guessing it is early to mid 90's in age... He says that he has reached a top speed of 82mph with it, and he still had a little to add but it scares the hell out of him.

Anyway, it has 12 spark plugs and other than that, I don't have any idea what makes it drastically different than a Merc. which I am more familiar with..

I've heard that this engine can kick some butt compared to other 200hp's...
But would like to hear opinions either plus or minus...
He is considering selling.. So this has me wondering...

KC
the 200 SS and the 150SS were both a bit underrated.
the duel plug engines can make unreal amounts of power if ya play with them. suzuki used to offer ECU's with no revlimiters but ya had to relinquish the warrenty card at the time of sale.
but I have seen those motors spin at 9200.
that suzuki uses removable cyl banks and a built up crank. with the correct carb work, porting work and exhaust cover work as well as a few other things, like welding the crank pins, its an amazing power plant.
speed costs money. how fast ya wanna go?
PS if you ever test the compression remove and ground all 12 plug wires, that motor can and will start with 6 plugs out and the other 6 still in place, dont ask how I know :) .

I think if I went that way, I would run 100% synthetic TCW3. I had young friend that had a Gold Color Suzuki 200, some special engine, but would rip and really liked gas. He finally siezed it by running full throttle for about 13-14 miles. He said it showed no signs of a problem until he throttles back, then it stopped a little short of idle. He did rebuild it and sold it. He was going diving and wanted to get into the water before the tide started running again.

Thanks to both of you....

In response, I'm not looking for any more speed that what he stated... But want opinions on the durability on the motor and ease of maintenance more than anything...
Rodbolt, I've heard a little of what you are saying about power improvements, but that isn't really what I'm looking to do...

I really am interested in the boat just as much as the engine... But the engine I know very little about...

was a very good engine if the maint was done, it did not like reactive maint at all.
most folks that do reactive maint get extra expenses.
the mikuni carbs are incredibly touchy and dont tolerate much trash or varnish. the fuel pumps need periodic maint as does checking ful system vacum for any restrictions, no one ever does until the next set of pistons.
its expensive and time consuming but you can pay now or later. your choice
