Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

On the engine there is a plan of the electrics. The only part that services exclusively the cylinders 1 + 2 is the CD unit. I would start there.

------------------

Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

There are 2 CDunits that are wired to the four ignition coils. The CD unit is about the same size as an ignition coil, maybe black in colour. One feeds cyl 1+2 coils. The other feeds cyl 3+4 coils. With voltmeter x 1000,AC scale put red meter lead in orange CD module
lead. Crank engine a few seconds. Needle should move. Oh black meter lead to terminal ground.
Same check on red CD module wire going to #2 ignition coil. Crank and needle should move.

------------------

ON THIS MOTOR THERE ARE 4 COILS ONE FOR EACH CYLINDER FOLLOW THE WIRES BACK to THE SWITCH BOX. FROM THE BOX TO THE STATOR; SO THE CD UNITS MUST BE IN THE SWITCH BOX? THAT ARE SEALED.SOMEONE TOLD ME THE SWITCHBOX ON THESE ENGING WERE MADE TO LAST A SHORT TIME ONLY.JUST ORDER ONE FROM FLA.AT THE COST OF170.00. ON LONG ISLAND THE COST IS 250.00 BIG DIFFERENCE. Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

You've got it. The book calls them CD unit and CD module. The trade call them switch boxes. That was cool. Now I understand more of how my own motor works!

------------------

Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

Lonewolf and Sony,
I work at a small marine inland and had a '97 120 Force that had spark but would not fire with the plugs in the cylinder. I ran the manual said to check the voltage at the coils. All 4 checked bad. Ordered the coils, swapped them no good still no fire with with plugs installed. So went to the next check and it said to trouble shoot the trigger switch, it checked good next it said to troubleshoot the stator. I guess they have had a problem with them as they have a service bulletin out and it changed the stator to a (red stator). We ordered the stator and installed it and ran like a champ. We think after much discussion at the shop that the coil broke down due to low voltage from the stator cause the coil to try to produce more with less. Any thoughts on this one??????

Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

Actual Lonewolf, I dont think you had the same problem I had. I could not get this one to fire at all with the plugs installed. As for changing the stator really pretty easy. removed the 1 1/16" nut on the flywheel put the puller on it pulled the flywheel off and stator is attached with six allen screw on the top of the motor. also has four wires coming out to the switch box. thats it. took me all of 20 minutes to change and have it running.

As for the red stator it is a replacement the merc came out with for most of the Force engine line. It come with instructions for about 10 different motors and some different wiring harnesses to support the other motor types. I would say that it is an upgrade from the old stator only.

Hitman.

Re: FORCE 120 NEEDS HELP

Not NORMALLY!
under normal situation the wire in a force/merc harness is gray for the tack signal. But i have seen a few different ideas. Its really hard to say though as I would have to see the harness. from there I could tell you. But if you dont have a plain gray coming out of the harness under the console gray with a stripe may very well be it.

Hope this helps,

And let me know what you find on the CDI/Coils/Stator/trigger switch problem......

Hitman
