Force 120 Trim Problem

Over the weekend I found that my motor would not trim down (up worked fine). When i pressed the down switch I would hear a click, but nothing would happen.
Fast forward a couple of hours later after my uneducated "tinkering" (general poking, unplugging, replugging, etc. :)). Now neither direction works and I'm hearing no clicking when the switch is pressed in either direction.
After reading some posts in this forum, I understand the original problem was probably a bad relay. Now I need to figure out what additional damage my "tinkering" has done and not sure where to start. Does anyone know if there is a fuse that i might have overlooked (i know, that would be too simple). Since I'm not hearing any clicking now can I assume that the relays are not coming into play? Any other ideas/guidance?

Re: Force 120 Trim Problem

sounds like your might have tripped the circuit breaker for the trim and tilt. it is located on the port side close to your starter solenoid, it is black rectangle box with a reset button on the end. Reset it and see if that solves your problem and then buy two new relays and keep the known good one as a spare in the boat. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com.

Thanks Bret! I saw a circuit breaker on the wiring diagram, but had no idea what to look for. I'll give it a try.
I think I saw a reference to picking up replacement relays at any auto parts store. Is that correct? If so would they likely have an exact replacement or should i ask for something specific?

Mine has 2 relays on it. If it would go down and not up I would swap them and see if it changed. That should tell you if it is a bad relay.

mine had problems a while back and it was a wire with a cold solder joint in the trim motor.

if you remove the wires to the trim motor and run them right to 12v does it run. Then swap then between + and - does it run the other way

Re: Force 120 Trim Problem

I took my bad relays to O'Reilly Auto Parts and they had replacements in stock. About $10. The only difference from the original relay is that the original relay had a tab with a hole in it so that it could be secured with a screw. The after market ones just hang free in the engine compartment.
