Force 125 (1987) shift pivot screw leaking

Just bought another 1987 Bayliner with Force 125. Filled the lower unit with lube as specified, in the fill and when it started coming out the vent, I replaced bother plugs.
I see the shift pivot screw location on the starboard side, near the bottom is weeping. Has been overnight. I tried to tighten the screw and it seemed tight but no "rubbery" feel before it stopped. I would imagine the o-ring is damaged or missing.
Can I remove this screw, place an o-ting on it and replace? I have seen that this screw should not be removed, however, if one needs to check and replace o-ring, it seems the only way. Any tips to be sure I can get it back in? I was thinking I should put it in neutral, remove cables from engine to be certain there is no pre-loading on a lever, pull the screw, o-ring it and replace.
Comment? advice?

If you want to go that route? I would NOT pull out the screw completely but far enough so I can slide the O ring over the head and pray it works.
pressurize to 5 psi and check for leaks then fill the cavity with silicone

If you pull the screw you must lay the lower leg on it's side and be extremely careful. You don't want the shift lever inside to fall off.
I did it yesterday on my newly completed gearcase, and as long as the shift rod is in place and the shift lever is connected to the yoke inside the leg you can do it. But again, take great care not to bump the leg.
If unsure unscrew it without taking it out, squeeze some sealant under the head and hope it does the trick.
