I had my 1989 Force 125 out for the first time this year and found two problems.

1) The engine is overheating at idle. The T-stat and water impeller were replaced last year. I pulled out the T-stat and ran for a few minutes, but it still overheated. What else could be causing it to overheat?

2) I noticed that when I revved the engine (with the cover off), the engine assembly appeared to shake and I heard a rattling sound that I don't remember hearing before. Is that a normal "de-winterizing" sound or is it something more serious?

Sounds like something crawled in and died and plugged the cooling system partialy.

Rattling sound or pinging is from running HOT........try pressure back flushing....

Re: Force 125: 2 Questions

The two problems, heat and pinging are more than likely related. The pinging could just be preignition caused by extreme heat in the cylinders igniting the fuel mixture off of the glowing piston and cylinder walls, rather than the spark plugs...Yuk..
This is seriously ungood.
First, do a compression check for future reference.
Then pull the exaust port plate and head. You will probably find white corossion everywhere.
This must be removed. You will need new gaskets and a torque wrench, but you might have also caught it just in time...Then again, you may find extensive scoring in one or more of the cylinders.
And Hooty reminded me of this;
If the old impeller got chewed-up,parts of it are probably in the cooling circuit somewhere.
