I would make sure that the sale is "as is."

Price really depends upon the motivation of the buyer and how desperate you are to get rid of it.

For example: I have a really well kept 1988 125 or a 1990 90 that I would want to sell for 1500 for either. For that though, the buyer would get full controls and I would mount the engine on his boat for him. I would also water test with him and give him the correct prop. But I really don't care if I sell them or not. If someone needed to repower, I would offer.

Consider that a typical rebuild will cost 13-1500 bucks, that's not too bad a deal.

If I really wanted to sell it fast I would try for 1000 bucks but given the overall sentiment against Force engines, I might not get it. Then again, consider also that junk parts engines will usually get 200 or so and a good tilt/trim can get 300 or so alone, 1000 for a whole functioning engine doesn't sound too bad. Especially considering the price of other brands and new engines.

The boat needing repair will actually reduce the value of the engine as a package. If it is in really poor condition it might just pay to bite the bullet and pay the fee to scrap it. (the boat)

The problem with selling any used machine is that there are too many people who put new paint on old junk. Buyers must factor this risk in and it significantly reduces the value of anything bearing the "used" tag. I think the best I ever heard it put was "when you spend money repairing something you only maintain instead of increasing it's value." So even if your engine is in tip-top condition and has had spotless maintenance it is usually only worth a little bit more than an good used one. For most buyers the only insurance they have that it is a good engine rather than good paint is your word.

... while your post rings hollow, feeling this strongly about Force i am sure you would turn down an offer of resuce, help or tow should some dummy show up with such a lousy setup. and if you did except the gesture you'd probably return the favor by letting them know just how rotten an O/B is getting you back to shore :p. Whats the beef? some stud with a Force steal your gal? or just past issues with keeping it up ...and running

Dino - a grand would not be unreasonable

whats it worth if it is in good running order? thanks for your help.

Well, in high season around here probably $800-$1000 maybe. People are going to hesitate because of the Force name unfortunately...at least those who haven't had the same luck with them that many here have had.
I would definitely include compression test results for a prospective buyer as well as a lower unit check combined with an impeller change, water test and estimated hours on the motor. Is the motor clean? is the skeg missing? does it include a prop? controls? etc. All of this will have a bearing on how quick and how much it sells for.
Sell it (like all used items) in 'as is' condition, no guarantees unless you can afford to buy it back.
Good Luck, hope some of this info helps.
