Force 125 mess up

So to preface this, I am very new to out board motors.

So that said I bout a fishing boat with a force 125. It has a couple of problems first was the lack of water movement through the motor so I ordered a impeller re-build kit. It also had a broken skag so I figured I would get that fixed while I had the L/U off. Well I got ahead of my self and pulled the bottom shift linkage pin that screws in instead of the drain plug.

Now the L/U is at the shop getting repaired and I am worried that i screwed something up by removing the lower pin. How hard is it to line up? It screwed back in but now that I think about it the shift rod moved very freely.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

Re: Force 125 mess up

In most cases you will need to completely disassemble the lower unit in order to get that screw back in place. If you have never done this before, I highly recommend getting help with it or at least obtaining a SELOC or Clymer book before attempting the LU disassembly. The LU has many O-rings, seals, and other small parts that can be easily reversed or installed improperly during re-assembly which will result in water intrusion.

I got the Clymer that is how I figured out I screwed up. Thanks for the help look like I have a fun evening planed for next week.

Re: Force 125 mess up

You can't "mess up" anything. Even if you were to try to run the unit with the internal yoke misaligned and the smaller saddle yoke dropped off, nothing would be harmed. The saddle yoke simply can NOT get through the front roller bearing so it will lay in the nose. The lower unit would simply either not go into gear or possibly only go into reverse or the clutch dogs would possibly rattle against each other.

Then you would need to pull the rear spool, prop shaft, and reverse gear. You would need to fish out the brass saddle yoke and re-seat it in the shift shaft with some grease and try to reassemble the parts correctly. It can be done but it IS way easier with the water punp and pump lower plate off, so you can see what you are doing.

The lower unit is off a 1986 force 125. I do not know any more information in respect to the model number. I get the unit back tomorrow and will let you know how it goes.
