force 125 water from pee hole only with muffs

I have an issue> i have a 1989 force 125, when the muffs are on water will come out the pee hole lightly at Idle, but when muffs are off and lower unit submerged to the water intake ports in a tank, no water at idle or reved up, then side of engine is too hot to touch and starts running rough, why wont the water pump pick up the standing water in the tank, it only works with the muffs and possative flow from the hose...

The water level in the tank you're using is probably below the impeller itself. You must submerge the pump below the water line to get it to pump water. With muffs you're forcing water into the pump which is why you're seeing water when you use the muffs. If you want to test the motor in a tank you have to make sure the entire lower unit, including the cavitation plate is below the water level as far as it will go, that should submerge the pump. If you're still having problems it may be time for a new impeller or a complete pump assembly. Good Luck!

Does the same apply to a 1986 Force 85HP ? I don't see a pee hole but the water spits out the exhaust. Is there supposed to be a pee hole also ? Model 856x6L
