I'm at my wit's end with this motor. The motor will start right away on high idle i let it warm up for 5 min.
Its smoking like the marlboro man at a poker game. It sparking on all 4, 138 psi on all four ,I set the static timing at 30 degrees by taking the plugs out and in gear cranking at wot its flashing on the middle of the 3 lines on the flywheel to the marker point.
I pumped out the old gas and put fresh mix in it,cleaned carbs set the floats even with the carb body when its upside down and level. The mix screws looks fine I cleaned both carbs ,inspected the mix screw seat with a flash light. The fuel pump diaphram was in poor condition flakeing blistering but no hole so I replaced it along with all the gaskits . The screen on the pump body was filled with cowl insulation foam but not clogged . I put new coil packs on becase the wires looked old and brittle . the primer bulb is rock solid. The Isssue is when I go towards neutral (after warm up 1200 rpms im guessing as there no tach on the boat) on the controll and it gets under 1000 rpms she cuts out and she will not start in neutal at all, Sounds like shes starving for fuel in the neutral position give the forward idle a push forward she starts and runs great top end sounds great. I synced the carbs and linkages. Is there a timing advance setting for the neutral position on the control some where and Im missing it or somthing .It seems like a very basic motor and cant belive I cant figure it out, I can fix anthing but I am stumped here HELP ME PLEASE as Im going to burry it in mybackyard shortly.
Thank's
Rick from NY

Sounds like your fuel recirculation system is not working. At idle speed, the fuel tends to puddle up in the engine resulting in too rich of a mixture and poor idle. There are some small hoses and check valves that have a tendency to get plugged up that prevent it from working properly.

i just removed the 2 recirc plates on the starboard motor side looks clean. blew it out with carb cleaner .What are the little jets behind the cover and flatheat screw ?
Are they check valve's?Do you know if the idle jet runs off the the recirc system?

Yes the check valves are behind the screens.

Great She will idle now not great (not purring like a kitten like I want) but huge Improvement but I really think I need to fill the tank up with gas get it out on the water and clear her throat .Also im installing a water seperater/filter and I orderd a tiny tach as there is no rpm gauge on the boat (really made tunning this motor challanging not having a tach) Thanks pnwboat for your help this is a great forum. I'll keep yall posted...Thank you

I traded a running quad for this 1988 capri cuddy the guy said( All's it needs is a starter solinoid lol) There is no way in hell he drove it like that (it was not running under 1200 rpms at all) and got towed back to the dock more than 1 or 2 times when he owned it and he must have threw in the towel. I almost did....I guess that explains the big scraches on the hull..lol

Rick36, good job on getting your idle fixed. Question: Are the fuel recirculation plates behind the fuel pumps. I might try to clean mine out too. I can run all day WOT no problem. Coming back to the dock (no wake zone) and loading on the trailer, it idles terrible sometimes even stalls.
I didn't mean to hi-jack your thread, just needed to ask a quick question.

Rick you might try setting static timing to 28 degrees, as at WOT running in the water, would put the motor at the factory 32 degrees. Setting it static 30 would be 34 at WOT. You might feel a difference? You can also check the timing out on the water if you are brave, have smooth water, and have a buddy to drive ;) I do it this way if I am in doubt.
