Hello, I am very new to the boating realm so go easy on me. If I ask a stupid question, which is probable, just remember that I'm a total newbie. While I've read several hundred posts on this forum and respect the knowledge, I'm only now taking the plunge to post.
That said, we're looking at a starter boat just to zip around in and tube with the kids. The one we're looking at is a 19' Bayliner (I know, not the Rolls Royce of boats) and it has a Force 150.
I've scoured the internet reading all I can but because I have ZERO mechanical capability, half of the buzzwords in these posts are over my head.
I am told that there is low compression in one of the cylinders (60-65) and that the others are strong. I don't know numbers beyond that...just "strong" (I'm awaiting actual numbers from their boatyard).
My question is this...what the heck does that mean? And is it a sign of imminent death to the engine? Can you run the boat with one flawed cylinder or is that a recipe for disaster?
I'm told it "just needs rings" according to their mechanic. No clue if that's accurate or not.
So, assuming the other cylinders are indeed strong, is the one with low compression a HUGE red flag? Can it be fixed if so?
The price is attractive but I don't want to end up with an expensive lawn ornament.
Any help would be appreciated but telling me to remove caps and look at various doo-dads is pointless. My engine know-how is non-existent.
