Hi
last summer I replaced the wiring on my trim motor because a short in it caused the wire insulation and relays to melt (yikes!).

anyway, there appears to be a short within the motor itself now because it’s become very unreliable whether or not the motor will activate when I press the button. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. So I want to replace it.

my questions: I bought a replacement motor and plan to install it this weekend.

1. Should engine be up or down when I remove the old trim motor, or does it matter?

2. How do I avoid a giant mess of hydraulic fluid everywhere, or is it just inevitable that it will pour out when I remove it.

3. What should I use to reseal the new motor? Gasket and Loctite? Or just gasket? Is there a spec for torquing the bolts?

4. How much fluid do I need to add back, and do I do that with motor up or down?

thanks in advance for any help!!

One more related question...how do I manually raise this motor up when the pump isn’t working. I haven’t found a way to do this in my searches. I thought there would be some sort of release valve but can’t find one.

No release valve/screw on Forces.

The front hyd. line is the closest your gonna get to a release.

Motor down, backoff the front hyd.line. Have a pan ready for the oil.
Watch out there should/might be some pressure??
If you drop the pump(4 screws) then the oil comes out.
The motor should be down when replacing or filling.30w motor oil.
Filling when up: that can push oil up into the electric motor.

IF? you have intermittent response? Then it's more likely an electrical problem.
The relays are junk and can cause problems with bad connections.
These pumps usually work or not.

If you replace the electric motor? there should be a gasket at the top and maybe at the bottom.
Make sure the shaft on the new motor is the same length.

Thank you so much for your help! I’m glad you told me about the 30W oil. I had planned to use trim and tilt fluid, but used 30 W conventional oil instead. I replaced the relays last year. And the wires going into the old motor had a short somewhere...wiggling cables caused intermittent response. But I couldn’t track down exactly where.

now I have a new pump motor and relays and hopefully it will continue to work great.
