I bought a bayliner capri 1992 powered by a US marine Force outboard 4 cyl, 2 strokes engine 120 HP, when I get the boat they told me the carbs where dirty and that they will be cleaned before I pick it up, then we tested out of the water and started quite easy and sound good, then when I put it in the water and try to move it I sound like it cant go up on the RPM, but without engaging the transmition it sounds great, I dissemble the carb and cleaned but it did not improve much, it moves at 5 or 10 mph tops, Later I take off the plugs, 2 where quite clean and 2 dirty, I also check the wires and they where quite rusty, I have cleaned them and check them using a meger and they are Ok, after this last things I havent been able to go to the lake to test it, today I will. Any sugestions.
:(
Thanks for your advise.

You need to do a compression test on your motor. That will tell us alot on how to proceed. Also check to see if you have spark on the clean plugs if you are running on two cylinders that would be a cause for no power.

The sparks are working fine, but the engine is not a lot better, I think it could be because im using it a altitud over 6200 ft over sea level, and the boat was at sea level, so I must change the fuel input valves, but im not shure to what size, any sugestions?

Thanks

You need a compression test done. Sounds like the head gaskets are blown. The reason those plugs are clean is because water is getting into the cylinders and steam cleaning them. It would also explain the rust on the wires. Do a compression test and post the numbers. You are looking for compression over 100 psi and within ten points of one another. Go to a car parts store. Here in the US they sell them for about 30 dollars

Had the same problem. It turned out that one of the wires that ran from the side of the powerhead to the stator was fried. I fixed and it ran great.

How are you testing the spark? You may want to get an inline spark tester from the part store. I had a hard time seeing the spark on mine without the tester. Which ones are firing, the clean ones or the dirty ones? I would think the ones that are not firing should have a lot of fuel on them.
