I see there is a lot a talk about similar problems. I have a 1998 40hp Force on a pontoon.
For some time, when trying to start it, it would occasionally grunt as if battery was dead, then start normally. Out of the blue last weekend, the starter wont engage or spin. I've replaced the battery(it was a 5yr old 24mo bat anyway), pulled the starter and solenoid, checked for clean/tight connections. Using a meter, I get 12 volts across large lugs on solenoid, but nothing on the yellow w/red stripe (or yellow w/black stripe , not sure) wire on solenoid. Also, I found a tan/white w/brown stripe wire pair in the cable bundle from console that was disconnected. They looked like they belonged together, so I connected them, but no help. Thanks for any suggestions. PS - can anybody recommend a good service manual?

It looks like it's time for a new starter. I had the exact same problem and a new starter did the trick.

I read all of the posts here and took the advice to go ahead and buy a new one. I hated to spend the money, but I'm happy now.

Yu can purchase a manual right here on iBoats. I think the link is below.

Chris

Yes...sounds like its either time to rebuild the starter or replace it.

WE can supply a new one if you wish to go that route.

marine.ron@Shaw.ca

TMD
