Force 50 1987 spring gasket found around drive shaft

I removed my gearcase to replace the lower shift rode seal because of shifting problems. When I removed the gearcase I found a metal spring seal around drive shaft. This metal spring seal was on the outside of the water pump. Is this seal part of the lower crankshaft seal? Is it easy to replace.

There should be a seal should be on the top side of the water pump, on the driveshaft.
It sets down into the top of the pump.
It is the easiest seal you will ever replace.

I think the driveshaft boot and retaining ring would prevent the lower crankshaft seal from falling down the driveshaft.

Additionally, if the lower crankshaft seal had fallen, I would expect to see raw fuel/oil draining down the driveshaft. ??

From the question, it sounds like you need a repair manual before going any further.

You are replacing a shiftrod seal because of a shifting problem? Please explain.

The seal keeps the oil in the lower unit. Are you getting water in the lower unit?

Keep us posted.

I have been using the Clymer manual but have not been able to find this part. What I think is part of a seal is made of fine metal wire which is wound like a spring froming a circle. The diameter is 1.25 inches wide and 1/8 inches thick. It is to large to belong to the water pump. The retainer on the upper part of the drive shaft is smaller than this part which can fit over the retainer. The 35 HP chrankshaft diagram has a chrankshaft collar seal and a chrankshaft lower seal and collar. My 50 HP diagram only has a seal. Could my 50 HP be more like the 35 PH model with this part being one of the crankcase seals.

Well ain't this a fine mess.
I guess the right thing to do would be to pull the powerhead and check it out.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
