Hello,

I've got a 1987 Force 50hp outboard that leaks gas out of a jet on top of the carburator when idling. The motor has been sitting in the sun and only has about 15 hours on it. I'm guessing that the needle seat isn't sealing and gas is filling the carb and going out the jet. Is that correct? It looks like I should take a paper clip with a short bend and pull the seat out. Is that the way to do it? Is the coil spring necessary in the float bowl? This one is missing. Are parts hard to get for this motor. It usually takes 2 to 2 1/2 weeks to get them from Mercury Marine in Fon Du Lac. Is this a good motor or should I peddle it? Thanks. Bob

Its not a great motor.

Why so long to get parts? Where are you located?

Pretty hard to tell what "jet" you are talking about.
I wouldn't remove any parts without a manual to get them back together. Are you sure the "jet" you mention is not supposed to be sealed shut? See number 12 in the diagram link below.

I suspect that it needs all the parts, including the spring.

Here is a site to order from.
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels2.asp?type_id=FORC

Here is a diagram of the carb.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...4099/10.png&inbr=1231&bnbr=5&bdesc=CARBURETOR

I'm in Cape Coral Fl. and a parts place ordered them for me. It's too long to suit me. It's a brass jet no 28 and a mechanic said if too much fuel gets in they will leak like that. I checked that the float was level too. That really only leaves the needle and seat I think.
