I got a Force 50 engine (1994) and it's only been used a couple of times and has been setting unused for about 5 years. I want to get it going but what precautions and maintenance should I do before I try and start it? Thanks.

Re: Force 50 in cobwebs

Look in the frequently asked outboards question section. There is a thread titled "awakening a sleeping outboard" or awakening and outboard. It will give you advice on what needs to be done before starting a motor that has been sitting unused for a while. Good idea to buy a carburator rebuild kit too. There is probably a cork gasket on the bowl of your motor that should be changed.

Re: Force 50 in cobwebs

I just bought a boat with a 1995 40HP. I don't think the motor has 100 hours on it and the boat was last tagged in 03. Here's what I replaced.

Fuel pump diaphram
Plugs
Carb kit
Impeller (keep in mind no tell tale stream on a force)
Lower unit oil
Fuel Filter
Cleaned out fuel tank
Replace entire hose/bulb

Probably spent $250.00

You should do a compression check first thing. Mine runs really nice now thanks to a lot of help from the guys on this board.
