FORCE 50 lower unit installation help

I am attempting to replace the lower unit on my 85 FORCE 5OHP.

Everything is going well but I am having difficulty connecting the lower shift rod to the intermediate shift rod. I can seem to get the lower shift rod in a position high enough that the holes in the rod and the "yoke" on the intermediate shift rod line up.

Any suggestions?

Hey Marvin, I also had that problem on my 87 50HP. What I did was push the remote control forward (or backwards) whichever one lowers the upper shift rod. For the added extra half inch, I disconnected the shift arm that's attached to the side of the engine head. Be careful with that bolt, it's an aluminum part, and the machined bolt attatched to it broke on me when reinstalling it. I lucked out and found a used one in town.

I just wanted to reply and let you know it worked to disconnect the part on the head. The motor is back up and running!
