Got a 1985 force50. I got 120 psi on both pistons. this thing starts but turns right off. if i give it some gas it will stay on, but doesnt sound pretty. i have a manual but it doesnt really trouble shoot, just says how to take stuff off and put it back on. what is the order of things that i need to check? im guessing i need to check spark plugs and timing? any help is appreciated.

thanks

Re: Force 50 wont stay on

Compression
Fuel
Spark

Outboards rarely get out of time, unless someone messed with it.
Leave the timing alone for now.

Check for spark.
If spark is good, try squirting a little premixed fuel in the carb as you try to start it.

Are you using the choke?
Is it working?
Are you pumping the primer bulb till firm, before trying to start?
Are you advancing the throttle when starting?

Wht effect does hitting the choke have, once it starts?

Re: Force 50 wont stay on

i push the choke, turn it, it starts right up for a second or two and dies. if i manualy advance the trottle it stays on (jammed a bottle cap on trottle), but like i said doesnt sound good, like if its misfiring. if i choke it when its on it turns off.

Given that info, I would check for spark first.

Pull the plugs, examine them, clean them.
You need a 7/16" blue spark, from the plug to the block.
