Force 50, 1988 model 507Y8D

Motor will start fairly easily when cold but after it warms up, it takes a tremendous amount of cranking to get it going. In order to get it to start, we fiddle around with the idle needle on the front of the carb and usually it starts. We cranked it so much it burnt a ground wire and blew a cdi module. (I think we have that fixed)

The guy we bought the boat from says it has never had a wrench to it, and it has sat for 3 or so years really without running.

I need to know if my course of action is correct before I continue. I ordered the gaskets and diaphragm to rebuild the fuel pump. I also ordered a carb gasket kit so we can take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning and replace the gaskets. Once done, I plan to go through the procedures to set the idle and the high speed (if it has one). We have a manual for it, just havent dug that deep into it yet.

Any other advice?

my 50 hp had the same prob...replace the three fuel pump check valves. replace fuel lines/bulb/tank with alcohol resistant type, get a fuel water separator and new spark plugs, use fresh 89 octane gas with stabil......this eliminates a lot of possible problems..I did it to mine. among other things..hope she runs...and with a good carb de-carbing, she should start easy.

The front screw is an AIR screw.1 turn out and maybe a little more.Get a manual and no more guessing.Ethanol ruins a lot of stuff.J

We've certainly never ran ethanol in it. Who knows what the prev owner did. I suspect he did though. Would this carb and hard starting issue be related to the fact that this motor only runs about half speed when the throttle is "floored"? Would the "link and sych" in the manual take care of that?

Re: Force 50hp, starting problems

Update - Bought a carb repair kit and gasket kit. Bought new gaskets and check valves for the fuel pump. Rebuilt/cleaned both the carb and the fuel pump including replacing all the check valves. Now the motor starts very easy. Almost seems like it does not make a complete turn with the flywheel and its going. Thanks to all the advice.

Just a word of caution for anyone that is going to rebuild their fuel pump. If it has not been done for a long time, or if ever, the check valves are extremely hard to get out. Do not pry or pound too hard on them to get them out, I busted my fuel pump housing in half and had to order another one. We ended up drilling several holes through the brass on them and pulling them apart with needle nose pliers.

markh28, FYI, ethanol is already added in the gas you buy it, up to 10%. Many of the people on this site use a fuel stabilizer on every gallon of gas they use to help prevent any issues that ethanol can cause. Glad to hear you got your motor running.
