I have a 1991 Force 70 on a 16' bowrider I bought this year that seems to use a lot of gas. Typically runs thru a 25 litre tank (6.5 G) in 45-50 minutes.

Also, it doesn't seem to vary much from WOT (5500 RPM) to slow cruise (4000 RPM).

Two questions:
1) is this normal?
2) what is the most economical speed to run at?

Thks for suggestions

Re: Force 70 hp Gas Guzzler?

I have a '92 70HP Force that seems to like gas, too.. I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue!!

Best I can figure, I ran about 40 miles last time out on the river -- 5 up, turned around, 5 down, 15 back up, turned around, 15 back down -- and I had to put around 11.4 Gal back in to replace what I'd burned.. That's just about 3.5MPG. If you have a 6.5gal tank and the same mileage as me, you should be able to get about 23 +/- miles on that... If you run that in 45 minutes, it's right about 30 MPH.. If that sounds about right, then we get about the same mileage out of the two motors. If you run less than 30MPH, then you're getting worse mileage than me.. Likewise, if you run more than 30MPH, you're getting better than me.

I have a 15.5' bassboat -- likely a bit lighter than a 16' bowrider -- and I get about 34MPH with 2 people.. I'd say (though I haven't checked) I probably get high 30's by myself with hardly any gear..

Lemme ask you this.... Does your motor have a 'pee-hole' that shoots water out?? The only water I've noticed coming from mine 'pulses' out of the 3 little 1/2" holes on the back when I'm on plane.. Does yours do that??

I hope we can help one another!!

Re: Force 70 hp Gas Guzzler?

Thks for replies.

ST, I think I could troll at 2500-3000 RPM but doubt it will plane.

cmjust0 - like comparing apples & oranges. I usually have no idea distance travelled and never really trust the speedometer, however ...

Boat probably 900-1,000 lbs; top speed 38-39 MPH with me (before a meal AND early season boat wax AND maybe a tail wind) at app. 5500 RPM; lower 30's after lunch. Rarely run it full out over distance.

Haven't carefully logged precise time against fuel and average speed but previous is current impression after 15-20 tanks. Also magnified since I'm always changing/refilling those little tanks (my kingdom for an decent size built-in tank).

Often cruise at 4000-4500 RPM which is 22-26 MPH depending on load & weather. Thus, it seems I'm worse than your back-of-the-napkin.

Several Q's
- in your 40 mile example, what's your average RPMs/speed?
- how much fuel do you carry?
- what do you consider your most economical RPM/MPH
- how long have you had the motor and what other problems can I expect (LoL)

NW -- I'm not really sure I can answer any of your questions back to me! LOL! Here goes:

Avg Tach/Speed: Well, my boat doesn't have a tach! Yeah, I couldn't believe it either.. I'm getting one soon, so I might be able to answer the avg RPM question then.. Second, I don't have a speedo either!! HAHAHA!! I got a buddy to clock me from a jetski once, and loaded w/ 3 people & gear, I was running 34MPH. Normally, I don't run WOT for long distances either.. I basically back it off until it quiets down, and run it there.

Fuel capacity: I CAN answer the fuel one!! I have a 15 gallon tank, and I always fill it up before going out.

Length of ownership: I've had this boat for about a month, so I don't exactly know what to expect either... So far, I'm really pleased with the little Force motor, though.. It starts, idles, shifts, and runs great!! I'm hoping that if I can keep from abusing it too bad, I can keep it that way!!

Hey, another question for you... What's the grease fitting on the front (bow) side of the lower unit for?? That's not where you put the gear lube in, is it???

Thanks!

Re: Force 70 hp Gas Guzzler?

I recently purchased a boat with a 85 model 85 horse Force. It is on a 15 1/2 foot boat..that is a 69 model closed bow boat. I have owned a few johnsons and this Force seems to drink a good amount of fuel also.
