While out on the loch my battery went flat,i had a spare so put it in place and she started 1st time however the next time i tried it made a screeching noise,i took the cover off and noticed that at the top of the starter the nut had worked loose and the return spring had fallen off the spindle i replaced the spring and the nut but when i turn it over the small cog that throws up to engage the flywheel just throws up and wont turn the engine the spindle appears to be well greased any ideas

Re: force 70hp starter

First check to see if when the bendix on the starter engages that the gear on the starter is lining up with the gear on the flywheel. If the bottom of the gear is rubbing on the flywheel you might have a problem. By tightening and loosening the nut on the starter will control the height of the starter gear can travel on the bendix.

Next I would have your batteries load tested. In the US we can take them to any auto parts store to have this done for free. I dont know how you would have this done. Your battery may be under rated or going bad and not have enough power to start. Also check all battery leads to make sure they are tight and there is no corrosion on the leads. Corrosion leads to contact resistance which means less power to start motor. If all this fails you may have to clean or replace the brushes in the starter motor. Here is a link for the parts starter 70HP Force

First take starter apart and clean the armature and check the brushes for dissimaliar wear. Verify that only one brush is in contact with ground and the other is issolated from ground. Clean everything and slightly file brushes if needed and re assemble. Good Luck
