I am hoping that someone can help me. On my Force outboard motor, MANUAL TILT,( MODEL NO: 856X7b, SERIAL NO: 4132. The bracket for reverse thrust will not lock in place, even with the engage/disengage switch locked on at the back of the motor, and the engine flies out of the water in reverse :+(
I can only assume that some cable / latch / rod has snapped off. I would be grateful for any info you can supply and where i can obtain parts from.
Is it an easy job to repair myself ?? Expensive ?
Cheers, Steve

Look around here and see if there is anything that looks familiar: In particular under the "Motor Leg" section..

web page

i need to do the same to my boat. I was wondering how that worked. Without some type of lever, you'll smash some fingers trying to get that latch to lock.

Re: Force 85 1987 Reverse thrust latch broken

Hiya red_neck_cpa
So do you ahve the same engine or different ?? WHat do you mean by smashing of fingers to get it to lock ?
Judging from the pictures etc from the link above, it looks like a link bar feeds down through the "block", through the lock bracket and a locking nut attached onto the underside of the link bar to retain it.
On the back of my engine head, there is a flip catch, which states engage / disengage for the lock bracket. At the moment, it does sod all, but im guessing the it either pulls the lock bracket up onto the engine stop bar, or drops it down slightly ?!!
Any ideas ??
Steve

Re: Force 85 1987 Reverse thrust latch broken

My engine is an 84 Chrysler 75HP. By the diagram listed by rickdb1boat, it appears that the leg is very similar. I have the latch, but the link bar on my OB is gone. I need to take a look at it to see it how it all works and get mine working again. nothing like the motor coming up out of the water and slamming against the transom. I'll be on vacation next week so I won't be able to look at it until I get home. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Steve,
You take a look at yours yet? Does anybody have a photo I could look at of the lock mechanism?

Re: Force 85 1987 Reverse thrust latch broken

Hi Red_neck
Well i had a look at the latch mechanism at t weekend, and it looks as though im mising the "link" bar and nut that holds up the Lock Bracket.
The only thing im not sure about is how this connects to the Engage / Disengage switch on t front of the motor leg, as the link bar looks like it screws into the motor block, slightly above the lock bracket !!!????
Have ordered a new link bar and nut from the link above, will let you know how i get along next weekend !!

Steve,
That would be great. I took a look at mine as well and could not figure how the engage/disengage switch was supposed to work it all. Plus the actual latch appears to be broken on mine, how to get the thing off looks like an interesting propostion.
