Ive got a 1987 85 horse force motor, When your in the water if you put the motor in reverse and give it a good amount of throttle the motor picks up out of the water like its pulling the rams out. the tilt and trim both work perfectly i can put it on the trailer and tilt it all the way up and over a weeks time it wont fall an inch. If your driving in forward this problem doesnt happen. I know the upper seal on the left side ram is seeping a very very very small amount of fluid, i leave it on my drive way and in a weeks time it may drip one lonesome drop, i havent had to add fluid to it since ive owned it.

there are two possible reasons I can think of.

1) the spring on the bypass reverse bypass valve is rusted. when the piston is pulled up the ball bearing falls out of the hole and creates a leak. When the piston is pulled down the ball bearing is pressed into the hole making a seal.

2) the reverse check valve in valve body is either damaged or has debris

check your rams. see if the top seals are cracking. If so, then start off with a DIY on-engine ram rebuild. If not, the start off with a valve body rebuild or replacement.
