Force 85 Trouble Starting

Hey Folks!

The Problem: Starter engages but turns VERY SLOWLY with the plugs in. Seems to get stuck at or near TDC for each plug. With the plugs out the motor turns freely and rapidly. With even just one plug in the engine it will turn very slowly

The Data:

Force Year Unknown probably mid to late 80's 85 HP Engine. Picked it up for spare parts but I'd like to see if I can get it started and maybe sell it as a working motor.

Compression is even 100 - 105 psi on all cylinders (Low, but it hasnt been run in a long time and those are cold numbers so I'm not particularly concerned)

This IS NOT a starter or Battery Issue. I have a brand new starter from last year that I pulled from a known working motor and it does the same thing on this engine, while the old starter has no problem starting the known working motor. I have 3 batteries that I have tested from and they all do the same thing. So it is not a starter or battery problem.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Your starter is bad try looking at the brushes. Before you do that though make sure you have the correct power going to the starter. If there is a drain somewhere it could do that.

Re: Force 85 Trouble Starting

Like I said in my post it was not a starter or battery issue... I did figure it out though; Just wasnt properly grounded and the wiring was shoddy. Ran a ton of new ground and power wires and she cranks over just fine. Actual cold compression #'s are 120, 121, 120 now. :p Feel kinda dumb now but thanks for the help.
