Force 9.9 water pump replacement

How difficult is this job? Can the shift linkage be disconnected with the lower unit, or does it have to be disconnected at the top where it connects to the shift handle mechanism?

Shift into forward.
Remove the 4 screws to drop the gearcase.
Drop it down about 3/4 inch and the shift linkage connection will be exposed.
Disconnect and then remove the gearcase.
