I got a great 200.00 deal from an old-timer that wanted this boat, trailer and 120 hp force out of his driveway. Said he had'nt started her for 2 yrs., but she ran then. Question is...what do I do to get her started. she cranks, but won't actually start. I checked for shut-off switch, but found nothing there. 72' boat, so I fiquered did'nt have the shut-off's then. New battery.. new gas and oil mix...pumped a tight in- line fuel bulb....motor looks new under the hood. What suggestion, or what would you do ? tks. daveywonder..wondering...

take spark plugs out and clean them, put a little bit of gas/oil mix in each hole. Put spark plugs back in. If it doesn't fire then check for spark and compression - you can rent the compression tester at autozone and the spark testers are about 10 bucks.

skidad...i did as you suggested with the plugs and fuel, and she ran for 3 sec...YESSS...plugs were pretty clean as rest of engine.,and is a 4 cylin..... now what? do i need to clear the fuel from the engine and carbs? perhaps changing the fuel-bulb line...and what steps in order to get rid of old fuel?... also, do i have to have the ear-muffs and water running just to get her started for afew seconds? having spark, does that mean compression and general health is probably ok?.... i'am all ears and ready to try what you suggest.....just trying to keep from going to a repair shop that i don't know i can trust....TKS...

I'm certainly not an expert like some of the other guys on this forum, but you could try loosening (just slightly) the carb bowls (nut is under bottom) See if fuel drips out - i sounds like you are not getting any fuel. If you have fuel in both then tighten them back up (not too tight) or maybe you want to drain them if you feel old gas is still in them.

Are the fuel lines really hard ? if so I would probably change the fuel lines coming from the tank to the bulb and from the bulb to the fuel pump. It should be marked on it what size - typically 1/4". If not bad I would at least try swapping the bulb - they are 20-25 bucks these days b/c of new standards. the other fuel lines are a little more work to change. I'm tired today but I sure others will jump in.
