Happy Holidays everyone.

I was hoping maybe someone could help me with this problem.

I went down to my boat yesterday to move it from my slip to the dock to remove it for the winter.

I tried to start the motor - the starter spinned a few times and then engaged and fired right up.

I set the throttle on fast idle to warm it up and then backed it back down to neutral.

It seemed to load up and then conked out.

It does this sometimes until I get it moving and its generally fine.

This time the motor would not restart.

Just a 1 click and no starter engaging.

I had a spare selenoid in my trunk and popped it in, cleaned all the connections and put a quick charge on the battery. Nothing..

I tapped the starter with a wrench thinking it was dead and again Nothing.

When you turn the key just one click and thats it.

The starter doesn't spin, nor engage.

Any ideas on what this could be?

I am certain the throttle is in neutral and wiggled the throttle lever a few times. Nothing.

Just a click and just my luck.

Ahoy, FishTheBay.

Get a voltmeter and measure the voltage from the "hot" stud on the starter to the block when you try to engage. If it is 10 to 12 volts your starter has failed. Probable cause is a broken wire to a brush or worn out brushes.

If there is no voltage or very low voltage at the starter measure from the block to the negative terminal of the battery. If the voltage is over .5V you have a bad battery cable or a bad connection on the ground side.

Then measure from the "hot" stud on the solenoid to the plus side of the battery. If you measure voltage there you have a bad cable or connection.

Finally, measure the voltage between the output stud of the solenoid to the starter "hot" stud with the solenoid engaged. Same as above, if there is voltage there is a bad cable or connection.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)
