I've read a lot of bad stories on these motors but took a chance, Owned a 88 125 for 3 years and put up with it's little problems but last weekend the lower unit blew apart for no reason, Looking for a ego boost to save it but I am curious what would be involved to upgrade to a different motor , My boat is a 1988 Maxum bowrider with a 125 force on it. Pull skiers (barely)tubes etc, and am now facing fix the force, replace the motor or replace the boat? Any input would help my decision. Really sucks because I spent a LOT of time installing a new floor in the boat and repainted it last year, But Trim leaks down and motor probabily needs a stator becasue it has been missing and stalling/overcharging/undercharging?

If you repower and go with anything other than a 1980's Force, you will also need a set of controls.

Repowering is a good choice if you can find a motor at a reasonable price.

On the other hand, you can find some real nice boats at reasonable prices this year.

Look for a new boat, AND a replacement motor, buy whichever you find first.

if powerhead good then why not also look for gearcase? I wouldn't be least bit surprised if craigslist had a good gearcase for $200ish.

Thanks for the info on the controls, It's a tough call but best iv'e seen is a lower unit for 450 used which is no clue how good it will be, I am boat and motor shopping and will decide what is the best way to go. I'm just afraid to install the lower unit and most likely a stator, Have to be safe and replace the water pump and seals etc and shortly after the motor decides to cash in.

I don't know if this will encourage you or not...BUT...my 1990 Bayliner Capri with 85HP Force blew a piston ring. First boat...I didn't water test...I know I know. (But I've since learned a TON from iboats.)

Anyway, I purchased a used 1991 90 HP Force for $1200 on ebay, I knew it was a risk. Guy had great feedback, and swore it was perfect and I could return if it wasn't...at his cost.

I think I spent $1500 all total on the motor, installed, tuned up, etc.

Then sold the broken one for $730 to someone on ebay, fully disclosed as completed blown.

My replacement ran great until I sold the boat 3 years later. So for the difference, of $770, I repowered my boat.

It can be done economically, was my point, you may have to be patient though...
