12 Footer - You gave me some good advice a few weeks ago about doing a de-carb on my 85HP 1987 FORCE engine. I don't know if you remember, but it was bogging done something aweful.

I just did the de-carb today. I couldn't quite figure out how to locate the carb throats, so I took off the intake to take a peek. I wanted to make sure the holes that I was looking at through the intake did in fact lead to the throats. They did, so I put the intake back on, tightened the boats and then started the engine.

Let it warm up and then sprayed the decarb in all 3 carbs while holding the throttle with the other hand at a faster than idle rate.

After the decard went in I shut the motor down and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Fired it back up - ran at fast idle for 15 minutes and then shut it down again.

Replaced the plugs (Well 2 new ones at least) the 3rd fell down into the bottom part of the engine and I can't get my hand down that far to get it out. Put in an old plug on the lower one (But going to get a new one tomorrow)

Started it back up and the motor seemed to run very smooth.

My only question is that when I fired it up the last time it took a bit for the water to start pumping out of the pee hole.

Any idea why??? Could this be because the thermostat may have been stuck from running it so much at a fast idle????

Put my tools away and am going to go start it up in the morning to see if its pumping good water.

Had the water pump and stat replaced last year.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I do remember. Yes, a sticky tstat can cause the engine to ovehereat. But it is normal for them to wait until the engine reaches a certain temp, then open. Give it two minutes to start expelling water. If it doesn't you have problems with the impeeller, tstat, obstruction in the water pickup or telltail,or any combintaion of said maladies.
Try a magnetic tool picker-upper,or one of those grabby wands available in the cheap tool bin at the auto parts store, for picking the plug outta there. I surely wouldn't leave it in there. It could get caught just right, under the throttle or somethng. And the tool is proly cheaper than the plug.
Just a thught.

12 footer- bought the grabby tool you mentioned and got it on the first try.

Also, the stat opened up fine today and pushed good water.

I also sprayed down the linkage and outside of the carbs with carb cleaner. I figured there pretty inside, so why not outside.

The motor runs strong in my driveway so now the water test this weekend.

They are catching 40 LBS Stripers in 1/2 mile off the beach. Can't wait to give it a shot.

Thanks for all the help.....

Reporting back to 12footer. Took the boat out yesterday after your suggestions of the decarb.

Boat hit 40MPH and ran great all day. That was the problem. It also brought up my low idle problem and obviously my bogging down problem.

100% fixed.

Your advice is great and makes my not so great mechanical ability amaze me.

Thanks again...

Fishthebay, you may have other issues, check the compression now that you have decarbed.
It could have been a ring stuck in a ring land, and the decarb freed it up. But check the compression. I wouldn't want to see you get towed in with a blown motor, and if there are conpression problems, it could be a cheap repair. But if you have, say, a blown head gasket, and take her out, it could blow the powerhead.
But if you have good compression, you are 100% fixed.
