First, Happy New Year to ALL!!! and Go Steelers....

I have an 85HP FORCE (1987)

I posted a month ago in reference to a hesitation problem and everyone recommended a de-carb.

My first question is I can't locate the openings to the carbs looking through the intake. All is see is a screw at each carb when looking.

Any suggestions????

Basically, my problem is that the motor idles low and kinda wants to conk out when put in gear during slow speeds.

Also, the motor at full throttle just boggs down and doens't seem to want to break free and get me up to speed.

When I am at full throttle my bow is out of the water, I am making a wake but thats it.

Won't get enough power to plane.

Please help, because the fish are really biting here in Virgina beach..

Had the same problem with my Merc, I finally let my master mech. @ the marina look at it and the linkage was messed up, then it ran great. I had to tickle the throttle when trying to punch it because it would want to near stall. Does this sould like you'r problem? GO EAGLES, 1st place for now!

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

Pursuit- Thats one problem, but the major one is the extreme bogging down, which results in not letting me get to a good speed and on plane. Its like something is holding the motor back.

Its cold here, but gonna try and do some troubleshooting this week.

Thanks for the input and YES go Eagles too.., but just to the superbowl and then get beat by the steelers.

PURSUIT,

WAS IT THE LINKAGE THAT SYNCHRONIZES THE CARBS WITH THE SPARK ADVANCE? WHEN YOU SAY YOU HAD TO TICKLE THE THROTTLE I ASSUME YOU MEAN YOU HAD TO ADVANCE IT REAL SLOW? I CAN SEE HOW THAT COULD DO THAT.
MY DAD HAS A JOHNSON 70-1995 THAT HAS STARTED TO DO THAT.

THANKS

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

If the engne seems to be developing full RPM at full throttle,or close to it, your problem is in the prop. The hub has spun out. It will act sort of like a slipping clutch on a car. As for the carb intake,it should be easy to get at. If this engine has a cover over the intakes, they will have a removeable plug in a hole, thruwhich you can spray the decarb into the carb body.
If you cannot develop full RPM, and it is stalling at idle, perhaps the problem is the linkage adjustment being set too low.Make sure the butterflies are opening fully at full throttle possition. But do decarb. It needs to be done at 60 hour intervals anyway. Also, the plugs will only last 60-80 hours.

1). check the butterflier, are they wide open
at full throttle.
2).if not then you know where your problem
is.
3).IF NOT THEN I WOULD CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM AND THE TIMIMG.
FIRST PLACE TO START.
4). I DO NOT THINK IT THE PROP BECAUSE OF
WHAT IT DOES AT IDLE.
5).IT SURE SEEM LIKE YOU COULD HAVE A BAD PLUG.
GOOD LUCK
REX A. HUBBLE

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

Sweater-- I would have to advance the throttle very slow when increasing speed from idle, then when I wanted to go to plane speed I would have to go back and forth slightly on the throttle, because it sounded like I was going to stall. Once on plane it was OK but if I came back down I would repeat the process. Very annoying. So I gave up and the mech. fixed it in 10 min.Prior to that I started at the fuel tank and cleaned the lines, primer etc. The linkage on Merc/mariner is very tempramental.

Reply back if you get it fixed. I'm just getting ready to install new cables to a 50 HP Mariner, and if it acts wierd, I'll try all the things mentioned above, as needed.

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

We've found that a lot of Forces need to have the idle mixture screw turned out 1/8 to 1/4 turn further than factory to make the transition from idle circuit to high speed circuit in the carbs. Sometimes this simple adjustment does wonders for these motors. Just locate the idle mixture screws and turn each one 1/8 of a turn counter-clockwise. If it helped then turn them out another 1/8 to see if there is further imptrovement, if not put them back.

Of vourse this assumes everything else checks out,

fishthebay, have you done a compression test and sparktest and checked wide open throttle timing and the carb linkege synchronization? what boat do you have ?what pitch is your prop?

Sounds like a fuel problem to me check your fuel pump and any hoses. You might want to rebuild the pump.

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

MeRCMAN, does this trick apply to 50hp versions as well?

My 50 hp force does not transition smootly from low speed to high speed. Typically I increase the throttle and it kind of pops into high speed. Before that though it jerks roughly. At low speed it is fine and high speed is fine. It is in the middle that it is rough.

I have found that the transition is smooth when cold but rough when warm. Do you think increasing the idle mixture would help in this instance??

I cannot try it since it in a barn in a cornfield surrounded by snow.

Re: Force Hesitation (Please Help)

We have seen this fix work more on the 3 and 4 cylinder Forces but that isn't to say it won't help your 50 too. Next time you take your boat out take a screw driver with you and try it. Just keep track of where you started so that you can set it back if things get worse.
